Best known for his monumental sculpture Athena Parthenos, the largest indoor statue in the western world, Alan LeQuire began his artistic career at the age of 11, when he began making objects in tin and copper. By the end of his high school years LeQuire was concentrating principally on sculpture, but at Vanderbilt University he studied English literature and art history rather than studio art. LeQuire completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC.

Artist Statement
“These are the first five of an ongoing series of colossal portrait heads which I call Cultural Heroes. All five are performing artists from the first half of the 20th century – Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Lead Belly, Paul Robeson and Woody Guthrie. I experimented with various ways of handling the material, intent on making the material and its treatment at least as important as the subject matter.” |
