Jerry Brown’s large-scale paintings are currently on view at Nashville International Airport. Using layer upon layer of thinly applied oil glazes, geometric forms and textures, Brown’s paintings can be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level or the viewer may ascribe a more personal, spiritual meaning to the images. As a student, he was influenced by the landscapes of Paul Cezanne, Piet Mondrian and other artists in the De Stijl movement as well as the non-objective paintings and constructions of Kasimir Malevich, El Lassitzky and Alberto Burri. Brown also has a very strong belief that the visual arts offer unique opportunities for breaking through social, political, religious and geographical boundaries. His work is included in public, private and corporate collections in the United States, Russia, Finland, Germany, Norway and Hong Kong.
Born in rural West Tennessee, Brown received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Memphis Academy (College) of Arts and later obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University in New York. In addition to his painting, Brown has taught at a number of colleges and universities in the Northeast and the South. |
