Greetings from Nashville features the work of students enrolled in the Black and White I photography class at Nashville State Community College during the Fall of 2003. Each semester, the students in this class compose a book of postcards that symbolize Nashville. Students are assigned to shoot anything that signifies Nashville to them. The resulting images range from people and events to architecture and landmarks. Some photographs are irrefutably Nashville - the Ryman, the Bell South building, Riverfront Park, while others depict slices of urban life that could be any street in downtown Nashville.
Each class edits their own postcard book by selecting the strongest images of the classes’ work. Next, they decide on a cover photo and title as well as the order in which the images are to appear. Selections from this semester’s postcard book were enlarged for this exhibition.
The photographs chosen for Greetings from Nashville represent the distinct character of the city. The classic mix of old Nashville, including the Ryman, Tootsies and the ubiquitous sight of a musician on the street here to make it big, co-mingle with the new Nashville - cutting edge architecture in a revitalized downtown. The technical skill and artistic vision of the students, many of whom are new to both photography and the darkroom, is also evident.
