Lendon Noe: A Personal Natural History - Concourse C

For the past ten years, Lendon Noe has undertaken a study of the natural world, often in contrast to its representation in art and language. She ponders questions like: "What does it mean to be natural? How do you collect or represent nature? What is the relationship between the natural and the study of it through art, science and other scholarly cultural pursuits?" Recently her focus has narrowed to the natural history of Tennessee, both by chance or coincidental encounters of her own and by intense study of the scholarship, crafts, folklore, and artisanship of others. She says that her works, which are primarily multi-media drawings, contain "stories, or fragments of stories, in image, artifact and text…a weaving together of past and present" into a visual narrative partially revealed and partially imagined.

Lendon Hamilton Noe is a native of Jackson, TN, where she is Professor of Art at Lambuth University. She earned an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in religion, philosophy and theatre from Rollins College in Florida in 1972 and a Master of Arts from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1976. She spent two summers in Avignon, France, where she began work on her Masters of Fine Arts degree in painting and multimedia, which she earned in 1994 from Norwich University in Vermont. Her coursework for the MFA included studies at the American Symphony Orchestra League in New York City.
