Ann Wells grew up in Nashville and received a degree in English from Duke University. She then traveled the western United States, worked for a year at Chilmark Pottery on Martha’s Vineyard and spent two years at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Cookeville, Tenn. She also studied ceramic techniques and glaze chemistry at Alfred University’s Summer School in upstate New York before receiving her Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1997. When she returned to Nashville, she taught for several years at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Studios. Her work has been shown at the Appalachian Center for Crafts, the Parthenon, The Georgia Museum of Art and various other venues. Her sculpture is included in the University of Georgia’s President’s Collection and the Tennessee State Museum’s permanent collection. She is represented by Cumberland Gallery in Nashville.

The group of clay discs titled View from Above, created for display at the Nashville International Airport, represents different kinds of patterns, textures, and images from the natural world. The artists says, “I like to imagine that I am viewing these pieces through the lens of a telescope, or electron microscope, or perhaps simply picking an object up off the ground for a closer look. It makes the world seem both bigger and smaller at the same time.
