MNAA and Iglewood Elementary:
Community Partners

Through Project Pencil, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is continuously coordinating programs and activities that benefit the students of Inglewood Elementary.

The Pencil Foundation's Adopt-A-School program pairs public schools with community partners. The program's emphasis is on the contribution of human resources rather than money. The MNAA plans activities that bring students to the airport and also sends employees to the schools to participate and assist in activities there.

Pencil Partnership Events

Arbor Day
The Airport Authority plants a tree donated by Bradshaw Landscaping at Inglewood Elementary in celebration of Arbor Day.

Art Gallery In the Atrium
Elementary students receive a very public venue for their artwork in the Nashville International Airport's North vending atrium.

Career Day
MNAA volunteers are present at Inglewood Elementary's Career Day to answer questions about law enforcement, architecture, planning, business and aviation-related careers.

Cultural Awareness Day (Black History Event)
Our Pencil Committee makes an educational presentation to Inglewood Elementary students during Black History Month. In the past, volunteers have created walk-though displays and have dressed as famous people who have made a difference in the African American experience.

Dr. Seuss Week
Our volunteers read classic stories to young Seuss enthusiasts.

Eagle Run

Volunteers from the MNAA Department of Public Safety bike patrol assist in Inglewood's Eagle Run. The Eagle Run is a reading competition. In addition to the race, prizes are given for Inglewood's top readers. The MNAA donates bike helmets as prizes, as well as the grand prize: a 21'' 10-speed bicycle!

First Day Celebration
The Airport Authority participates in Inglewood Elementary's first day of school. Employees are on hand to greet students, faculty and parents with First Day stickers and breakfast treats to start the school year off right. The airport even loans their police and traffic officers to help direct the heavy first day of school traffic!

Halloween Treats
MNAA volunteers make sure each classroom has plenty of Halloween treats,

Holiday Tree Decorating
Inglewood students visit the airport in December to decorate two holiday trees on the Baggage Claim level. They adorn the trees with hand made ornaments they create in their art classes.

Kinderpassports
In April, all of the Inglewood Elementary kindergarteners descend on the Airport Rescue Firefighting Facility (ARFF) at Nashville International Airport to have identification booklets made. These booklets serve as a safety tool for parents in case of emergency. MNAA's public safety department photographs and fingerprints each kindergartener. The students also learn about safety from our officers and are treated to a tour of the ARFF facility.

Pencil Pennies
MNAA employees donate spare pennies throughout the year, to make a financial contribution for school supplies.

Space Week
Each year, MNAA volunteers participate with Inglewood Elementary during Space Week. Past activies include RC plane flights, gravity defying egg capsules, an aviation art contest, and paper airplane distance competitions.

Students on Stage
The airport is thrilled to host our Pencil Partner at one of our music venues, as they perform their choral spring concert and holiday music.

St. Nick Pics
Our Pencil Committee donates film, photographic services, and Santa's special helper so that kids can take home a photo with St. Nick.

Trash to Treasure Program
During the year, MNAA employees gather redundant office supplies and materials to donate to Inglewood Elementary School.

Walk to School Day
MNAA employees participate in Inglewood's version of Walk to School Day. MNAA also provides bottled water and healthy snacks.
