New Checked Baggage Screening System
In addition to the ongoing terminal renovation program, other interior work includes construction of a new checked baggage screening system. This activity is generally not be visible to the public. Following Sept. 11, 2001, much of BNA’s lobby has been dedicated to explosive detection baggage screening machines. These machines are being replaced by a new in-line explosive detection system (EDS) located beneath the terminal and out of the ticket lobby. Once the new system is completely online, the ticket counters can be relocated and the public queuing and circulation space increased. This automated baggage-handling system will streamline and improve the safety and security of the screening process for checked baggage. This technologically enhanced equipment requires passengers checking baggage to take a couple of extra steps to ensure a smooth process.

Passengers checking baggage should:

  • Remove or cover any old tags or bar codes, as they may cause the scanners to misread the bag.
  • Ensure that straps and hooks are removed or tucked into the luggage.

K-9 Boris
K-9 Boris, a Belgian Malinois, was born in March 2007 in Holland. He came to Nashville via Florida and Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Boris’ handler is Officer Scott Vick.

Malinois are bred primarily as working dogs for personal protection, detection, police work, search and rescue, and sport work. The U.S. Secret Service and Royal Australian Air Force use the breed exclusively.

Boris and K-9 Officer Vick have lots of hard work in their future. Boris is described as timid and shy and is not quite comfortable with his surroundings. The noise and commotion in the terminal, such as the movement of passengers, live music acts, and the continuous announcements made over the public address system, tend to distract Boris quite often. But with each passing day, Boris gains confidence and becomes less timid.

During the first months of training, Boris became acclimated to his surroundings. He is training with explosive smells.

Some of Boris’ favorite things are:
  • Praises from his favorite handler (Scott)
  • Science Diet dog food
  • Kong (training tool; when hidden and found, Boris gets treats and praise)
  • Boris loves to come to work and finds that staying at home is very boring.
  • Working at BNA.
The MNAA’s Department of Public Safety K-9 teams are reaccredited during annual evaluations conducted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). MNAA K-9 teams have consistently passed with high scores and are certified members of the TSA National Explosives Detection Canine Program.
