Art communicates, pleases, shocks and influences, but when Mildred Jarrett began art classes at age 15, these purposes never entered her mind. Art was just something she felt compelled to do. Jarrett’s continued education includes study at the University of Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State University, Volunteer State and Watkins College of Art, Design & Film, where she earned an Associate of Fine Arts. Jarrett lives in Nashville, Tenn., and is represented by Tinney Contemporary.
Numerous world travel experiences have enabled Jarrett to recognize the diversity of people and their art, which is reflected greatly in her work. There is usually no subject matter except for emotional feelings.
“Passion for people and the emotional expression of painting are truly God-given gifts. I suppose the most important aspect of any pursuit is the manner in which it is approached. An honest, sincere spirit will always dominate technique. It is my strongest desire to reach the viewer with a ‘hold on to your heart’ emotion!”
Artist statement: Explorations
Jarrett states, “The explosion of color in panels becomes a process of action/reaction, rising from the roots of abstraction. Pictorial content becomes secondary. Transformations echo emotions as color, shapes and moments carry the viewer beyond picture-making.”
