Poverty & the Arts is a Nashville-based nonprofit that supports homeless and formerly homeless individuals by providing an environment that fosters creativity and strengthens community relationships. Through arts programming, the Poverty & the Arts artists are able to develop confidence and determination, income-generating opportunities, job skills and community relationships. Volunteers interact directly with homeless participants in an effort to break down stereotypes and encourage relationships that are critical in breaking the cycle of homelessness.
The homeless and formerly homeless artists in our Artist Collective are pursuing art and creativity as a means to make real, sustainable change in their lives. In addition to earning 60 percent of the sale of any original piece of art, the artists gain valuable artistic and business skills through the Artist Collective program. Art becomes a way for our artists to find beauty in the midst of their daily struggles, and it inspires them to move forward. Art also opens a social space for our community members to view our homeless as a creative and talented part of the community.www.povertyandthearts.org
